The Three Enemies: Light, Heat, Moisture
- UV Light. The main reason for yellowed midsoles. Sunlight oxidizes the material—most visibly on white EVA and rubber. A shelf by the window is the worst place in the house.
- Heat. Accelerates every chemical reaction, including the degradation of glue and foam. Attics and areas near heaters are critical.
- Moisture. Leads to mold on leather and textiles and causes adhesive bonds to loosen. Basements are often too damp.
The ideal location is unspectacular: dark, dry, cool to room temperature, with some air circulation. A wardrobe in the living area is significantly better than a basement or attic.
Before Storage
- Clean them. Dirt, salt, and skin oils continue to work, even in the box.
- Allow to dry completely. A sneaker stored damp will reliably develop mold. Allow 24 to 48 hours.
- Maintain shape. Shoe trees or loosely crumpled acid-free paper maintain the silhouette and prevent creased toe boxes.
- Loosen laces. Constant tension distorts eyelet rows.

Using Silica Gel Correctly
The small bags from the packaging are useful, but not forever. Silica gel saturates and then releases moisture again. Replace the bags about every six months or use reusable ones with a color indicator.
Do not use more than necessary: Storage that is too dry causes leather to become brittle. A relative humidity of around 45 to 55 percent is a good range.
What to Consider for Long-Term Storage
- Do not stack without a box. Pressure permanently deforms toe boxes.
- Move them every few months. Briefly take them out, air them, check their condition. This allows early detection of initial detachment.
- Condition leather occasionally. A thin layer of leather conditioner once a year prevents drying out.
- Be realistic. Sneakers with polyurethane midsoles will degrade over the years regardless of storage—good conditions slow this down, but do not stop it.
Rotation Instead of Permanent Storage
Sneakers are built to be worn. Material that is never moved becomes more brittle than material that is regularly used. Those with multiple pairs benefit from rotation: wear each pair, then let it dry for 24 hours, then wear the next. This extends the lifespan of all pairs simultaneously.
