Counterfeits have gotten better. Ten years ago, you could spot them by a crooked logo; today, the shape, color, and packaging often look right at first glance. Nevertheless, there are details where most replicas fail – and you can check these yourself.

First: check the environment, not the shoe
Most bad purchases can be prevented before the shoe even arrives. Look for these signals:
- Price. A currently sought-after model 60 percent below market value is not a bargain, but a warning sign. Compare with common resale platforms.
- Imprint and legal texts. Missing or copied information, no legally verifiable address, no German right of withdrawal – all reasons to steer clear.
- Payment methods. If only prepayment, crypto, or "friends and family" is offered, you have no buyer protection in case of a dispute.
- Product photos. Exclusive manufacturer images instead of actual photos of the available pair are a bad sign.
- Returns. A dealer selling genuine goods has no problem with a normal return period.
Workmanship: where replicas almost always give in
Pick up the shoe and go through these points:
- Stitching. Even stitch spacing, no loose threads, no skipped stitches. Irregular stitching on the Swoosh, heel, or overlays is the most common characteristic.
- Glue residue. Visible glue on the sole edge or yellowish seepage at the transitions practically never occurs with originals.
- Symmetry. Place both shoes side by side on a flat surface. Logos, perforations, and panels must be at the same height.
- Material quality. Real leather feels textured and drapes softly; cheap synthetic leather appears uniformly embossed and stiff. Suede should not shine.
- Weight. Originals are usually a bit heavier because the midsole and cushioning have more material.
- Smell. A pungent chemical smell that doesn't disappear after days indicates inferior adhesives.
Labels, codes, and box
Inside the shoe, you'll find the size label with an item number. This number must match the one on the box label – including color code and size. A pair where the shoe and box don't match is either incorrectly packaged or not genuine.
Pay attention to print quality: On originals, the font on the label is sharp and centered, and the spacing is correct. Blurred letters, crooked alignment, or spelling mistakes are clear indicators.
